Arty Farty

In a competition run by Radio 4 Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire has won the coveted (?) position of ‘Britian’s best loved painting’. What I find more interesting than the picture itself is the controversy as to whether its famous red sky is a dusk (which implies Turner is lamenting the death of the sailing age) or a dawn (implying the birth of the steam age) – or maybe its both! It seems that Turner captured the zeitgeist of the time and managed to encapsulate the cultural controversy which was rampaging through Britain’s streets.
Anyway its much better than the bloody haywain that came second!
