Bigfoot Bogus

As predicted in a recent Difference Engine posting entitled Mr Monkey Goes to Mexico by Coracle , serious doubts are now being cast (no pun intended) on the suggestion that impressions in volcanic ash are footprints made by the earliest known human settlers in the Americas.

In this week’s Nature it is suggested that, rather than these alleged hoofprints being 40,000-year-old marks that could potentially have debunked accepted theories of human migration into the Americas, they may have, in fact, been made by picks used to quarry the site!

Oh dear.

It also seems that the ash has now been dated to 1.3 million years ago – more than a million years before modern humans evolved.

Now, that’s what you may call experimental error
