Death by a drunken hit and run driver is the very seasonal introduction for the best Torchwood story of the series so far. Reminiscent of the Doctor Who episode Love and Monsters the story is told from the perspective of Eugene who is a victim of a road traffic accident and owner of an alien artifact called a Dogon Sixth Eye.

It is the properties of this Sixth Eye that gives us the structure for the story, as Eugene is presented with a fresh perspective from which to examine his now extinct life.

The result is an episode that is refreshingly mature, devoid of the usual adolescent swearing and sex, and tells a story that is genuinely adult because of its sophistication rather than its usuitability for children.

Eugene, played by Paul Chequer, is the star of the episode and, of the Torchwood team, only Gwen Cooper, played by Eve Myles, features significantly. While she struggles to find an alien link to Eugene’s life and death she is unwhitingly unraveling the threads of his life for him, and us, to see. There are no spooky aliens this time, but an interesting story written by  actress and writer Jacquetta May who brings an example of grown up scripting and an opportunity to see what Torchwood could be capable of when it discards its overreliance on fannish writing. I hope we see more like this.

… and yet I don’t seem to be able to get beyond the gap in her front teeth, which I think may, like the Tardis, feel bigger from the inside than the outside.

Eve Myles FTW! Great to see her in more popular TV shows recently like Dr Who and now Torchwood!

I too thought this one was good. A ‘love-life-cos-its-really-very-too-short’ story. I’m still not sure about this Jack fella though, I’ve not seen every episode, but I know he can’t die (why?) and I gather he is pansexual. But he doesn’t do much, he seems to be different for no reason. Can anyone explain?

Jack can’t die due to Rose bringing him back from the dead when she was channelling the time vortex! (My gods, that is a sci-fi-y sentence)

Jack is pansexual because he is from the 23rd Century (i think) and everyone there is.

Also, can someone tell me, is Jack and the Admid bod (the one with the thing for the cyber-woman) getting it on? What was all that with the stopwatch?

Although it may seem that Captain Jack and the admin bod were preparing to get it on I personally think they were just getting ready to play Boggle.
