SF Bbbbbblog of Fame

Beware the B???s (not the killer bee???s which of course deserve an honourable mention). But the fact that in any ABC of SF this letter is one of the most controversial. After all who do you pick? Bester, Bradbury, Burroughs, Brunner, Blish, Ballard, Banks, ?? perhaps for the kiddies you would pick Baum, or for those wishing to be obscure Balzac! . Or maybe you go Pop SF and pick Battlestar Galactica or Battlestar Galactica, or Back to the Future or Battle of the Planets ??
In the end, and in an effort to sidestep all these issue I???ve picked someone who never wrote any SF but who has had a profound effect on both Science and Science Fiction, namely, Charles Babbage. . The subject of numerous steampunk stories (incidentally covered in our level three SF module ???Quantum Worlds???) and also featured in our critically acclaimed workshop ???What if Babbage???s Difference Engine Worked???? at the National Endowment for Science Technology and Arts Conference ???What If ..???. which we hosted in Glamorgan in June 2004. What I find interesting is that in an attempt to create an artefact from a parallel universe with historicity (see Dick ) the UK Science Museum constructed a working model. of Babbage’s Difference Engine. Science Fact becoming Science Fiction becoming Science Fact …
