Swimming in the [main]stream

ishiguro

NPR (National Public Radio of the USA) has plenty of goodies available. Rhodri in particular is a big fan. However I did come across this interesting short (6’30) piece available free online. It all about how SF themes are finding their way into more ‘mainstream’ literature. In particular watch how Whitbread and Booker prixe winner Kazuo (Remains of the Day) Ishiguro claims that his new novel Never Let Me Go which is set in the future and is the story of three clones growing up together is NOT science fiction!

Some of my friends at university were surprised I read science fiction. When I pointed out that they themselves had books like “1984” and “Brave New World” on their shelves, I was told those books weren’t really science fiction.

Well you could argue “1984”:http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/1984/ is now “science fact!”:http://school.discovery.com/lessonplans/programs/1984/
