The G Spot

Of course I would want to nominate Francis

as our representative under G in our Science Fiction Blog of Fame, particularly as I am obsessed with his influence and recasting his story as the birth of SF instead of the Aldiss contention that it all begins with Frankenstein).

But by any other measure – influence, stature, size of bow tie, best novel silverag/124C41.html”>name , having the most prestigious Gernsback. That having been said we’re not going to talk about him either.

There is, however, a short story in our actual nominee’s collection Burning Chrome entitled The Gernsback Continuum. And that must mean that our G Spot goes to the father of Cyberpunk William Gibson :

gibson

Noted for his sprawl series of cyberpunk novels and short stories the most oft mentioned Gibson anecedote is how he typed Neuromancer on a manual typewriter.

We use his work extensively in our level three module studies not just in Cyberscience (the afore mentioned Neuromancer and also Johnny Mnemonic) but also in Quantum Worlds (The Difference Engine co-written by Gibson and Bruce Sterling – with significant contributions by the already dead Disraeli whose novel Sybil they disassembled and of which they scattered long passages of prose description throughout their book in what some would call copyright enfringement, others laziness, still others an homage, and the authors themselves an attempt to engender historical ambience.

    Goooo Gibson!

Credit Gibson with helping us form our earliest understanding of
the consensual hallucination that the neologism “cyberspace”
    would become.

bq. Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by
millions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children
being taught mathematical concepts… A graphic representation
of data abstracted from the banks of every computer in the
human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in
the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data.
    Like city lights, receding..
